What is a Handpan?

Handpan is the term commonly used for a new generation of musical instruments, belonging to the family of steel pans and meaning steel pan played by hand.

There are several types of Handpans, developed over the years from the original instrument invented in Switzerland in 2000. The steel drums played in Trinidad and Tobago are also a kind of pan.

While the Caribbean steel drums are played with sticks, Handpans are meant to be played with the hands.

How is it made?

The Handpan is typically constructed by two circular half-shells of sweet steel joined together at the rim in order to leave a hollow interior, resulting in the characteristic curved shape.

The top shell is sculpted in different sound areas, extremely sensitive to the touch. There’s the central note, known as “Ding”, and a variable number of note taps, in a number usually from eight to seven, hammered around the surface and tuned on a single scale.

Handpans are usually played by hand in the lap, engaging the player in a new, sensory way.

Rhythm, melody and harmony, combined in a single flow.

Playing an Hanpan is creating a range of sound colors, an ever-changing interplay of energies that can not be replicated exactly.

Caress the silky, curved surface of the upper shell. Be gentle. Take your time.
By the touch of one finger, you are already creating a cascade of resonating sound waves: a sound cosmos. Explore the surface with your palms and fingers. Feel the craters and valleys, the hills on the surface, the grounding weight on your lap. Feel the sound resonate with your breath. Without thinking, a melody appears. Where was it? How did you find it? Just follow. Intuition will take you there.

Playing a Handpan is a much more sensory, intimate experience than a traditional jam session. Intuition is the key; you will naturally learn to discover your way of playing this amazing instrument, as there is no conventional path to follow, or to be restrained by. No formal music training is required to play the Handpan, nor music sheets. The playful nature and enchanting sound of the Handpan makes it an instrument particularly beloved by children, as well as musicians.

That is why we say there is no right or wrong way to play an Handpan: it’s a journey of discovery, spiritual healing and self expression, through the embracing sound of steel music.
